KYPP VCE VM Course Overview

Kurnai Young Parents Program is a dynamic educational program that fosters learning while acknowledging and appreciating the challenges of young parenthood. Students participating in the program undertake the Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) along with units of Certificate II in Cooking and Hospitality as well as other certificates. The program serves to support parenting and life skills while offering a range of opportunities, ideas and pathways for further training and education.

 

  • LITERACY

The Literacy Skills unit focuses on the development of skills and knowledge to read and write a range of texts on everyday subject matters, which may include some unfamiliar aspects or materials. Students will develop their media literacy through close studies of a range of visual and aural text to develop critical thinking, questioning and reasoning. At the end of the unit, students will be able to read, comprehend and write a range of texts within a variety of contexts and gain knowledge, understanding and skills in spoken communication for different social purposes

  • NUMERACY

The purpose of the Numeracy unit is to enable students to develop the confidence and skills to perform simple and familiar numeric tasks and to develop the ability to make sense of mathematics in their daily personal lives. The mathematics involved includes measurement, shape, numbers, conversions and graphs that are part of the student’s normal routines around shopping, travelling, cooking, interpreting public information and planning according to time lines and schedules. Students learn how to manage personal and household finances, interpret numerical information, make product comparisons and develop their financial literacy. On successful completion of this unit students will be able to perform everyday mathematical tasks which involve a single mathematical step or process.

  • PERSONAL LEARNING

Through their chosen research project students practice and develop their self-management and teamwork skills to plan, organise and undertake either or both classroom and broader community activities or events. Students develop and refine their technical skills and knowledge around their chosen community engagement and social justice context, developing a network of contacts and links. Through this research project students gain a better insight into community supports, as well as develop their interest around social justice issues and community engagement. Students actively pursue potential pathways within their community.

  • WORK RELATED SKILLS

The purpose of the Work Related Skills Strand is to develop employability skills, knowledge and attitudes which are valued within community and work environments as a preparation for employment. Students create resumes, cover letters, formal letters, computerised job applications, practice job interview skills, phone call scripts, presentability and introductions, recording information, research a variety of workplaces and the associated pre-requisites for a range of career pathways. Students keep a log of career supports, job apps and job agencies.
